In the spring on 1984, several families that lived in northeast San Antonio were attending our sister congregation, Our Savior Lutheran Church, located in north-central San Antonio. They met and decided to request the WELS (Wisconsin Evangelical Lutheran Synod) Mission Board to consider exploratory services in the northeast part of the city. In May of 1984, the request was granted and a call was placed to William Brassow, a young student from the seminary. Pastor Brassow was commissioned on July 29, 1984 to serve the northeast San Antonio area. The congregation rented a home for Pastor Brassow at 186 Meadowland, Universal City and began plans to find something more permanent.
Our first place of worship was in the Coronado Elementary School cafeteria, where we held our first service Easter Morning, April 7, 1985. By September 22, 1986, the WELS Home Mission Board granted our exploratory outreach "Mission Status". On December 4, 1986, we purchased 2.2 acres of land located at the corner of Kitty Hawk and Wagon Crossing in Universal City for our church building.
In June 1988, we started construction on the parsonage now located at 424 Wagon Crossing. In August of 1990, we broke ground for the 3,600 square foot church building we now call Cross of Christ Evangelical Lutheran Church. The building was completed and dedicated to the Glory of the Lord on March l7, 199l.
In May of 1994, Pastor Brassow accepted a call to Saginaw, Michigan and, as we said good-bye to our dear Pastor, we made plans to welcome our new Pastor. Again, we were assigned a new graduate from the seminary and Pastor Timothy Spaude was commissioned and installed as the shepherd of our flock on July l7, 1994.
The congregation grew and many small children could be found throughout the church. With that in mind, in the fall of 1999, an ambitious program was started and named "Little Lambs Pre-School". However, the challenge was too great for our current facilities and the Pre-School was put on "hold" in the fall of 2000.
Pastor Spaude accepted a call to Greenfield, Wisconsin and on June 11, 2000, we again said good-bye to another wonderful Pastor. The Lord again blessed our congregation and on December l0, 2000, we installed Pastor David Schneider as our shepherd. Pastor Schneider, his wife Kristin, and their three children, Marah, Hannah and Ethan moved here from Sola Fide Lutheran Church in Lawrenceville, Georgia. Pastor Schneider served as an Associate Pastor at Sola Fide prior to accepting his call to Cross of Christ here in Universal City, Texas. Pastor Schneider graduated from Wisconsin Lutheran Seminary, Mequon, Wisconsin in June 1995 with a Master of Divinity. The Schneiders were blessed with a fourth child, Samuel, in 2004.
In 2002 the church council and leadership began exploring ideas for expanding the congregation’s facilities so that we could accommodate the varied programs we desire to offer. Options of building extensions on the existing property required more parking space and left insufficient green space for festivals and children’s outdoor activities. We began to explore another option of searching for a larger piece of property. For over two years we wrestled with decisions over which options we should pursue. God provided an answer to our prayers by providing the means to move forward through a member of our church who generously gifted the congregation with his estate. A larger piece of property became available in a prime location north and east of us in Cibolo.
In May 2006 we purchased 9.75 acres in Cibolo at the corner of Tolle and Weil, just off of Highway 1103 about a half mile from Steele High School.
We look forward to building a new chapter in our congregation’s history as the building committee makes plans for our new location. Plans for a new facility are in development. The parsonage at Wagon Crossing sold in July 2006. The Schneiders purchased a home in Schertz. For now we call Universal City home, but soon we will be just down the road and reaching out to more souls by God’s amazing grace.
God continues to write our history. His plan for us each day is for us to know Him more and make Him known to more. We hope you will join us in this mission!
